THE ROAD AHEAD
The meaning of things to us depends upon whatever that thing is attached to. We arrive in this world not knowing one syllable of one single word. In this world all those words are attached to things; and spoken in a multiverse of tongues. As we come, we are ill-equipped with the necessary intelligence to make the connections between the things we see, and the world invisible we see not. Here begins the perplexity of his way on the road ahead for man. According to Moses, before man arrived; even before the world ever was in place, or the mountains, we had a habitation of God, in the Almighty. We are actually older than the hills themselves, older than the mountains; and yet all our lives are we strangers upon earth. We are as kept in solitary confinement: in houses of clay whose foundations are in the dust of the earth. We peer out through windows of flesh, we beckon with the speaking trumpet; all the while our ways are hid from us, and we grope as blind….and in darkness—on the road ahead.
It’s been noted that birth is one hundred percent fatal, and few things certain that are not death and taxes. By that reckoning it would seem there is precious little room for surprises, and even less for excitement. The road ahead is largely a predetermined consideration. Such are the ways of those that are of the earth, and born of women: in their best view of things, it is hard to see anything greater than man, and that is particularly vexing. It is made vexing where such views make no account of the realm eternal whence they were conceived and now are estranged. The final
analysis is something they don’t quite see: they are created by God, and made over in the image of man….by man. All the while there is the God size vacuum that leaves him with a ceaseless hunger for “what next”—on the road ahead.
We start out shuffling about like so many assiduous beetles, for goals not our own, but prodded along like cattle to embrace the dreams, and hopes of others: to place our feet proper in a dance designed by others, and not our own. As we lean, we unlearn; as we are made, we are unmade, and scarce can hear the distant beckonings of home eternal as we become citizens of the world and undone. “It is an uneasy lot at best, to be present at this great spectacle of life and never to be liberated from a small hungry shivering self—never to be fully possessed by the glory we behold, never to have our consciousness rapturously transformed, but always to be scholarly and uninspired, ambitious and timid, scrupulous and dim-sighted.” George Eliot …..on the road ahead in solitary confinement.
From birth onward are two roads ahead. We are undressed of our intuitive genius, and suit up into tight fitted quarters of mere men, as the divine is lost to us. We learn, attain, and achieve nine yards whole, as men achieve and do as men; and yet may die as men in all the glory we behold and not embrace—on the road ahead. “Reality, in fact, is always something you couldn’t have guessed. That’s one of the reasons I believe Christianity. It’s a religion you couldn’t have guessed.” C. S. Lewis. On the record God tells us that the heavens, and firmament speak of him in their design and purpose. In the QUANTUM CAFE physicists of the Quantum Mechanic variety find that they can make no progress forward in their study of the universe unless they abandon all the assumptions they’ve have about the world you have come to know in order to understand this counter-intuitive science where everything is possible. None of these things are noticeable to you when you look at the world on a scale of one-to-one, your scale of real world size. When you look at the small particles invisible to your eyes but of which your world is made nothing looks like your world. If you were the size of one of those particles you could walk through a wall, exist in the past, present, and the future at he same time or do any of the miracles that Jesus did.
