Not quite sure when it was that someone got it into their minds that it was ok to reinvent the directive that Jesus in no uncertain terms spelled out as qualifications for those who believe in him, but at some specific time someone did and left that modification as a legacy model for us to then follow.
This just plays into the propensity that we have to want to enshrine things; like Jesus’ ministry works have been enshrined as references to validate our faiths. I believe it’s one of the founding fathers of this country who said each generation will have to shed their own blood to guarantee our liberties so dearly purchased. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
We can’t keep referring back to what Jesus did to validate our faith, we have to continue doing the same things as proof that his life continues in us today.
If that life continues in us today it cannot do so without his identity in those who would live it. Often times Jesus was thought to be Elijah, or John Baptist come back to life therefore do great works show forth themselves in him. Jesus gives us his reputation for great works to show forth themselves in us. The qualifications are not based on
man-made institutions but by the very works showing forth themselves in you because you believe. How many people bear the credentials of renowned world-class institutions and yet no one of Jesus’ works ever visit such person. If you met Jesus and miracles weren’t dripping off him so that you could get healed just by touching him….you didn’t meet Jesus.
We not only have to, but need to adopt the Identity of Christ because one of the most deadly foes a believer has is their past. People and circumstances are always there to remind you of that past. God’s remedy for that is the faith of Abraham and his seed. His seed says you’re a brand new creation…your old thing have passed away to rest in peace, and all things are become new in Christ whose life has none of your old past things in it.
